16th October 2026 Rikshospitalet Bicentenary
Since 1826, Rikshospitalet has been a key institution in Norwegian healthcare and has symbolised medical progress and national care.
Established as a national hospital and teaching centre, it evolved into a modern facility with specialised departments. In 2000, it relocated to Gaustad, equipped with advanced technology and a focus on research and education.
After merging with Ullevål and Aker hospitals in 2009, it now serves as a national reference hospital for transplants, paediatrics, and neurology. Treating patients from across Norway, often with rare conditions, it is also a vital training centre. In its anniversary year, plans are underway for the future Rikshospitalet, set to open in 2031. The new building will house national and regional functions, including an emergency department and children’s hospital, and be adapted to modern preparedness and technology.
