Shipping to the US
Introduction
From 1 January 2026, you can once again send goods as normal to the USA and Puerto Rico – but with new customs and reporting requirements for shipments. US authorities now require that all shipments with a goods value between 0 – 800 USD are declared digitally and that customs duties and taxes are paid before transport. This also applies to gifts. Handwritten address labels cannot be used. Posten Bring has developed a solution together with an American partner that makes the process simple and secure for you.
FAQ
You can once again send goods to the USA and Puerto Rico, but all shipments must be ordered and declared digitally via posten.no. Handwritten address cards cannot be used.
No. All goods shipments – including gifts – must be declared digitally to US Customs. Orders can only be placed on posten.no.
No. This will not be possible. Digital registration is mandatory for all goods shipments to the USA and Puerto Rico.
Yes. In addition to postage and any customs duties, a fee for import clearance or customs handling in the USA will apply. Note: Gifts under 100 USD are duty-free between private individuals, but the import clearance fee still applies.
You must provide: US customs tariff number (10 digits) (HS code). This can be found via simple steps in our ordering solution.
This is a requirement from US authorities for correct declaration. You will receive help to find the correct tariff number in the ordering solution.
The amount is converted from NOK to USD at the time of ordering using the rate stated on Toll.no. The converted amount will appear on the customs/address label and ensures correct processing in the USA.
Yes. The solution calculates the customs rate for each item line based on the country of origin. You will get a clear overview in the ordering solution.
The country where the item was manufactured. Customs are calculated based on this. Look for ‘Made in’ on the item. This also applies to gifts even if they are duty-free up to 100 USD.
The country of origin must be stated to send the item. This is an absolute customs requirement and must always be provided. If the origin is unknown, you cannot send the item.
If the item is homemade in, for example, Norway, you state Norway as the country of origin.
No. Payment of duties now takes place with the sender.
No. The USA has no solution for refunding customs duties and taxes.
If you do not send the parcel, you can get a refund. Contact Customer Service and request cancellation. Your payment will then be refunded in full. If you still want to send the item, you must register a new order.
According to the Postal Act §15, the sender has control over the shipment until it is delivered to the recipient. This follows the Universal Postal Convention Article 5, but the USA has reserved against this provision. Therefore, it is not possible to change the order once the shipment is ordered, paid and handed in. The shipment is then in transit to the USA and all information has been shared with our customs partner in the USA for settlement with US Customs. After handing in to Posten, the shipment cannot be recalled and it is also no longer possible to get a refund.
For labels printed at Posten’s drop-off points, USD appears on item lines, but NOK on the total value. Posten will correct this, but it will take some time. This is temporary and accepted by US authorities. Customs processing will still be correct and in USD.
No, but an English receipt is planned by summer 2026.
Yes, all customers can use the solution. However: Businesses cannot select ‘gift’ for gifts under 100 USD. That option is only for private individuals, as they can send gifts under 100 USD to the USA duty-free. For businesses: Even if the parcel contains a gift, the business must still pay US import duties. Therefore, businesses should select ‘Sale’ or ‘Other’ as the reason, not ‘gift’, for shipments under 100 USD. This is important to pay the correct import duties and avoid delays and customs issues.
Document and letter shipments without goods can be sent as normal. Buy postage or stamps and address the shipment without the need for a customs declaration.
If the shipment is returned in new packaging, the same rules apply as for a regular goods shipment and you must make a new order via www.posten.no.
The shipment will normally be returned to the sender and the recipient will not have to pay anything for the shipment.
