Delivery of mail every other day from July 7, 2020
Background for the changes
The number of letters sent has fallen from the peak year in 1999 to the present by 70%. Specifically, this means that the postman delivers on average only 3 letters per mailbox per week. It is therefore not sustainable or financially justifiable to maintain five days of postal delivery, and we therefore switch to delivery every other day from 7 July. This is also in line with the new Postal Act passed by the Storting in 2019.
What impact do these changes have on me?
On what days does my mail arrive?
- If you receive mail in a mailbox, you will receive addressed mail every other day; Monday, Wednesday, Friday one week, and Tuesday, Thursday the second week. This also applies to those who have a country mailman.
- If you have a mailbox, we deliver all business days; Monday to Friday.
Packages directly in your mailbox
About half of the country's households will have "Pakke i postkassen" (parcel in the mailbox) delivered to the mailbox every weekday. The other half receive delivery every other day as for letters and newspapers.
Check if your area has delivery of parcels in the mailbox every weekday. You choose this option in the online store and you will receive an SMS when it is delivered.
If the parcel is too large for the mailbox, you pick it up as usual at your pick-up point, or you register a fixed delivery point at your home where the postman can place the parcel.
When you shop in an online store and choose home delivery or delivery to your pickup location, there are no changes.
Newspapers distributed by Posten are delivered every other day. If you have a mailbox, the newspaper is delivered every weekday.
In areas where there are no separate newspaper routes, Posten has entered into agreements to distribute the newspapers. This means that Posten will distribute newspapers Monday-Friday to all subscribers in areas defined by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
There will be no change to the packaging, labeling or delivery of mail, so here you do as you normally would.
Mail is delivered to the recipient's mailbox every other day. If the recipient has a mailbox, letters are delivered every day as before. Do you want mail every weekday; you can rent a mailbox.
Send via own mailbox
You can send letters and small packages from your own mailbox. When you order a pickup, we will automatically display the date of pickup from your mailbox. You can look up on which days the mailman arrives in the service above.
Send via the red mailboxes
If you need to send mail as a matter of urgency, use the red mailboxes at Posten that are emptied daily. Other red mailboxes are emptied in connection with distribution, and letters delivered there can therefore take an extra day.
Send via the post offices
Hand in letters and parcels as before at the Posten. Check submission deadlines for your post office through the map.

We are working on developing a solution so that you can look up the days on which the postman arrives at your mailbox. The solution will be available well in advance of the change.
Yes, if we have any mail that is for you. If mail is addressed to you, the mail will be delivered every other. If the postman did not visit your mailbox today, the postman will be at your mailbox tomorrow/next business day.
In a solution that will be launched at the end of June, you can check the day you receive mail by entering your zip code.
Yes. The mail distributes mail to your address every other business day. If it is a holiday, you will post the following business day instead.
Some recipients may find that they receive the mail later. The mailman will continue to deliver mail in the period from 08.00 to 17.00. The time may vary slightly from day to day, but we arrive before 17.00.
Some do. At some places we will distribute unaddressed advertising on Sundays, but the addressed mail arrives on weekdays.
You will receive addressed mailings 3 times one week and 2 times the second week. In some areas we will hand out newspapers every day.
No. By electronic notification you will be notified as soon as it is ready for pickup. Letter notification can take a day longer than before.
No. Packages arrive at your post office as quickly as before. If the sender has not provided your telephone number, we must physically send you a parcel notification – this message may take a day longer than before.
No. The shipment arrives at the post office as soon as before and if the sender has entered your telephone number, we will send you the e-mail as quickly as before. But physically retrieve message may take up to one day more than previously. The different senders have selected different solutions. For any bank or credit card, you must sign off at reception.
In some cases. Passports are often delivered directly to the mailbox, and addressed shipments can in some cases take a day longer than before, depending on whether you receive mail one or the other day.
Customer service will keep track of the days of distribution in your area and will be able to notify you of the first possible day you can have your stored mail home at checkout.
If you need to have the stored mail delivered on a day when there is no distribution to your private address, you can request that it be retrieved at Posten.
Newspapers are delivered every other day.
In areas where there are no separate newspaper routes, Posten has entered into agreements to distribute the newspapers. This means that Posten will distribute newspapers Monday-Friday to all subscribers in areas defined by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. In the rest of the country, Posten delivers newspapers every other day.
This means that some subscribers can receive two newspaper editions on the same day. If it is from a newspaper that is published in the immediate area, it will some days be fresh – if the publication is for example on a Tuesday and the postman visits your box on that Tuesday. The following week you will receive the Tuesday edition on Wednesday.
