10 June 2016 – Kristiansand Zoo And Amusement Park's 50th Anniversary

Once a small park with bears as its main attraction, now the facilities are housing a number of large, national attractions.

When Kristiansand Zoo opened in 1966, the plan was to build a zoo with animals from the Norwegian wilderness. But on the day after Christmas, December 26, 1979, Julius the chimpanzee was born. Julius’s father did not want anything to do with him, so Julius grew up with the family of the zoo’s director, Edvard Moseid. Julius became a magnet for children of all ages, and a few years later Captain Sabertooth followed
up the success in Kjuttaviga with night performances written by Terje Formoe. Both are now being celebrated on stamps.

The water park was finished in 2010 and is the largest investment in the history of the zoo. The large park attracted even more visitors, and their numbers have been increasing every year. In 2015 the number of visitors passed the one million mark!

This summer’s extensive anniversary program will bring together both children and adults, and it clearly demonstrates that Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park holds the position as Norway’s oldest and largest amusement park with facilities that meet a high international standard.
