19 February 2016 – Biathlon World Championship

The Biathlon World Championships will be held 3–13 March at Holmenkollen in Oslo. Our tradition-rich national arena for winter ski sports also arranged this event in 1986 and 2000.

This year the Championships are expected to host around 400 participants from almost 50 countries. The biathlon has grown in popularity in many countries since the first world Championships were hosted by Saalfelden, Austria, in 1958. The first world championships for women were held in 1984. The biathlon competition format has been developed in close cooperation with the television companies, and this has contributed to raising the popularity of the sport.

BK1928 – In the track

In 1965, Elverum hosted the first biathlon world championships to be held in Norway, and for the first time in history a Norwegian, Olav Jordet, claimed the top spot on the podium. Vingrom in Lillehammer hosted the world championships in 1977, and Holmenkollen hosted for the first time in 1986.

NK1929 – On the pitch

Norway was the only applicant for this year’s world championships, but it should be mentioned that we also applied in 2014 and 2015 and were not selected. This year it is finally Norway’s turn again!
